We live in a time of constant change. The rate of change in this past year alone is massively higher than in the past few years combined. For almost everyone, how we Live, Work and Play has been impacted.
There are many positives to these changes, it’s not all doom and gloom. Many people are seeing new opportunities opening up in front of them.
This is good news… because the sad reality is that millions of people have had unexpected job losses. Job loss means loss of income, for some that means a challenge to provide for families and a whole host of other problems.
This reinforces the fact that there is a risk on relying on someone else / an employer for your job security. Generations ago, having a good full-time job meant that you had safety. Now, our view of this is changing. Having 1 job that can be lost because of a corporate decision, budget cut, economic downturn or lock-down, is a risk.
For all of these reasons, we see the rise in the freelance community. People are realising that there is safety in being in charge of your own destiny, in setting up multiple income streams and being able to work flexibly.
Being a freelancer may be the most secure way to build your future and financial security. Here are just 5 good reasons why we think that freelancing is the way to go:
- Be Your Own Boss
The most common reason for starting out as a freelancer is the ability to be your own boss. You don’t have to work with a control-freak manager, you don’t have to be clocked in and out of the office or you don’t have to get told off for being late. You are the master of your own work, and that is a great way to feel free.
- You’re Free To Work Anywhere
You’re a business owner. You dictate where you work as long as the job gets done. Your clients pay for your work, and it’s not their decision where you work.
- You Choose The Projects You Want To Work On
If you’re a web developer and you hate working on food company websites, you don’t have to. If you’re a copywriter and never want to write about shoe ads, you don’t have to. Employees have to work on projects their boss assigns them. Freelancers choose their own projects based on their expertise and passion.
- You Choose The Clients You Work With
The client had sent you a document to ask you to change the position of a comma. The fact that moving the comma herself would take less time…very unfortunate.
Freelancers don’t have to work with people who annoy them. They are free to choose the people with whom they work.
- You Never Have To Do Unpaid Overtime Again
Companies tell you that salaried employees are expected to hand over their free time for no compensation because they’re salaried…That’s not part of the freelancing life. If you’re working, you’re earning. You charge clients for work, and you don’t work unless you’re getting paid.
